Muharram is one of the 4 sacred months in the Islamic calendar. The 10th day of the month, known as Ashura, is mourned by Shia Muslims. It is because Ashura commemorates the death of Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was beheaded on October 10, 680 in the Battle of Karbala which took place in Karbala in present-day Iraq.
Shia Muslims wear black clothes to mark the sad occasion and perform matam (chest-beating using one's hands and self-flagellation using implements like knives and blades).
This blog contains 20 photos from Muharram mourning in Chennai.
