Tourism in and around Chennai

As part of my course Advanced Diploma in Professional Photography, which I pursued from Ambitions4 Photography Academy, Chennai, one of the modules was about location photography. And for the final project of the module, we had to choose a city and show it as a popular international tourist destination by shooting 100 photos.

I chose Chennai and have titled my project 'Tourism in and around Chennai'. This blog contains 30 photos from the project.

Marina Beach, Chennai.
Marina Beach is one of the longest beaches in the world and the most famous tourist place in Chennai. The panorama that I shot from Vivekanandar Illam is 5-6 km wide.



Madras Lighthouse, Chennai.
Madras Lighthouse, opened in 1977, is unique. It is the only lighthouse within city limits in India.



The University of Madras, Chennai in the background.
The University of Madras, established in 1857, is one of India's oldest universities. In the photo, the prominent building in the left is the Senate House, constructed between 1874 and 1879. The black statue in the right (foreground) is the Triumph of Labour, installed in 1959.



Napier Bridge, Chennai.
Napier Bridge is easily recognisable by its 6 white arches. The bridge on river Cooum was constructed in 1869.



Kapaleeswarar Temple, Chennai.
Kapaleeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built around the 7th century. It is one of the 275 great Shiva temples collectively known as padal petra sthalangal in Tamil.



Ashtalakshmi Temple, Chennai.
Ashtalakshmi Temple is situated by the Bay of Bengal and is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and her eight primary forms. "Ashta" means eight in Sanskrit.



San Thome Basilica, Chennai.
San Thome Basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese over the tomb of Thomas the Apostle. It is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage centre.



St. George's Cathedral, Chennai.
St. George's Cathedral, built in 1815, occupies an important place in the history of Christianity in India, as the Church of South India (CSI) was inaugurated here in 1947.



Ashurkhana Thousand Lights Mosque, Chennai.
Ashurkhana Thousand Lights Mosque is a revered place of worship for Shia Muslims. Its construction was completed in 1810.



Government Museum, Chennai.
Started in 1851, Government Museum, Chennai is India's second oldest museum.



Connemara Public Library, Chennai.
The old building of Connemara Public Library was established in 1896 and is one of the 4 national depository libraries in India.





Statue of Thomas Munro, Chennai.
The statue of Thomas Munro is a peculiar one due to the absence of stirrups as well as saddle. It was installed and opened in 1839.



Madras War Cemetery, Chennai.
Madras War Cemetery is a memorial dedicated to martyrs from Commonwealth nations who sacrificed their lives in both the World Wars. It was established in 1952.



LIC Building, Chennai.
LIC Building was the tallest building in India when it was inaugurated in 1959. Located in the arterial Anna Salai, it serves as the southern regional headquarters of the Life Insurance Corporation of India. The building on the right in the photo is Agurchand Mansion, constructed in 1916.



Valluvar Kottam, Chennai.
Valluvar Kottam is a monument completed in 1976 and dedicated to the classical Tamil poet and philosopher, Thiruvalluvar.



Shore Temple, Mamallapuram.
Shore Temple in Mamallapuram is a granite temple built by the Pallavas between AD 700 and 728. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram.



Jaws III in Madras Crocodile Bank Trust, Vadanemmeli.
Madras Crocodile Bank Trust is a reptile zoo and herpetology research station started in 1976 in Vadanemmeli. Jaws III, a fierce saltwater crocodile, is the biggest attraction here. It is the largest crocodile in captivity in India and probably one of the largest in the world.

Kovalam is a surfing village and has many surfing schools.

Muttukadu boat house is a water sport facility offering rowing, wind surfing, water skiing and speedboat riding in Muttukadu.

DakshinaChitra is a museum established in Muttukadu in 1996 and dedicated to South Indian heritage and culture.

Chennai Snake Park Trust is India's first reptile park formed in 1972.



Royal Bengal tiger in Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Chennai.
Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Chennai has been functioning at its present location since 1985.



Retired locomotives of Indian Railways in Chennai Rail Museum, Chennai.
Chennai Rail Museum, in the premises of Integral Coach Factory, showcases the rich rail heritage of India.



Semmozhi Poonga, Chennai.
Semmozhi Poonga, opened in 2010, is Chennai's first botanical garden.



Adyar Eco Park, Chennai.
Adyar Eco Park, also known as Tholkappia Poonga, was created in the backwater of river Adyar in 2011 to restore its fragile eco-system.



Broken Bridge, Chennai.
Broken Bridge, on river Adyar, is a bridge to nowhere. The bridge partly collapsed in 1977 and has never been repaired.



Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex, Chennai.
Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex is one of Asia's largest perishable goods markets. It was inaugurated in 1996.



Ranganathan Street, Chennai.
Ranganathan Street is a major commercial street and is referred to as the most crowded street in Chennai.



Express Avenue, Chennai.
Express Avenue is one of the leading shopping malls in Chennai. It was opened in 2010.



Chennai Central railway station, Chennai.
Chennai Central railway station was built by the British in 1873 and is an iconic monument of Chennai.
