Aguada Fort

Aguada Fort in Sinquerim is strategically located at the mouth of Mandovi River where it flows into the Arabian Sea. The fort was built by Portuguese invaders from 1609 to 1612, to tighten their grip over Goa from Dutch invaders and the Marathas. In other words, Aguada Fort was the venue for rivalry between 2 European invaders, right here in our Bharat !

Built in the Portuguese architectural style, Aguada Fort consists of an upper fort and a lower fort.

Aguada Fort gets its name from the Portuguese word 'agua', meaning water. That is because the upper fort was used primarily for water storage. There is a huge water reservoir here. Also, the upper fort is surrounded by a moat and has storage rooms and bastions. The iconic structure in the upper Aguada Fort is the lighthouse built in 1864, to guide ships coming from Portugal.

The lower Aguada Fort was used to berth ships and to maintain vigil over enemies. One of the bastions of the lower fort is named the Queen Marina Bastion, which protrudes into the Arabian Sea.
